Learning Values through Golf
Honda of the Desert employee volunteers to teach in the Little Linkster program

The Little Linkster program at The First Tee Coachella Valley in Palm Desert currently has more than 75 participants ages 4-6. The First Tee Coachella Valley offers a variety of programs for youths ages 4 to 18 and has 470 total youth members. The Little Linksters' $100 annual fee includes weekly lessons and unlimited play on The First Tee's golf par-3 nine-hole golf course.

"Every lesson starts and finishes with core values: Respect for yourself, respect with others, and respect for your surroundings," says Mark Stipkovich, the fleet internet sales manager at Honda of the Desert. "I am donating my time four days a month to the tune of 20 hours along with my better half, Jackie Summers. It's very rewarding for us and a chance for us to give back to community."

Sports have been traditional vehicles for teaching life lessons, but today, sport at its highest levels, is played in an atmosphere where we have a preponderance of athletes who deny they have responsibility to be role models, let alone idols of the young.

There is, however, a sport that not only continues to teach positive life lessons, but also depends on an adherence to them for its very existence. That sport, of course, is golf.

It is a game in which there are no officials to call a breach of the rules. It is a game where only the individual participants know if the score he or she handed in is the score that was actually shot. It is a game with a rich history and timeless traditions that invites respect for the old and wonderment of the new. Most of all, golf is fun. The game is never solved, perfection is never achieved; there is always the opportunity for improvement and success. It is also a game where the raw beginner can play a competitive match with the most seasoned expert. It is a game where youngsters can delight in playing with each other and it is a game suited to the young and old playing together - if they have a place to learn and play the game at all.

The First Tee, an initiative of the World Golf Foundation, has as its mission: To impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character-development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf.

Our goal is to provide the golf learning facilities and the experience that will enable kids from every walk of life to partake of a game that teaches values for life and which can be played for a lifetime.

Through research it was determined that the primary reason more children, and especially economically disadvantaged children, did not play golf was because of the lack of  places that welcomed them, places they could physically get to, and places that they could afford. The World Golf Foundation created The First Tee in November of 1997 as a way to bring golf to youngsters that otherwise would not be exposed to the game and its positive values.

Honda's new Crosstour

Honda said this past week that its new Accord Crosstour sport utility sedan will go on sale Nov. 20 with a starting price of $29,670 (plus $710 freight).

That brings the base two-wheel-drive EX model with a V-6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission. With Honda's simplified pricing, no options are offered, just different trim levels.

The next Crosstour up the price ladder is the EX-L two-wheel drive for $32,570, which has everything that's included on the EX - plus a leather interior.

Then comes the Crosstour EX-L Navi model, which includes - you guessed it - an in-dash navigation system. The price for this one is $34,770.

There are two all-wheel-drive models. The Crosstour 4WD EX-L ($34,020) and the EX-L Navi ($36,220). With both, the leather interior is standard. There is no less-expensive all-wheel-drive model with a cloth interior, though.

"Leveraging the many benefits of a car-based platform, the Accord Crosstour starts with the top-level refinement of the Accord V-6 sedan and further expands utility with a sleek-yet-functional profile for increased cargo space," the company said.

This vehicle essentially is an Accord wagon, but it's not available with the four-cylinder engine of the Accord sedan.

Instead, Honda decided to base the Crosstour on the upscale version of the Accord, which allows the automaker to sell it for a much-higher price and attract customers who don't mind paying more.

It's designed to "fulfill multiple roles for both style and function," Honda said of the new Crosstour, which is assembled at the company's East Liberty, Ohio, plant of mostly North American components.

"A bold and sleek exterior conveys a prestigious presence from the outside, while premium interior styling extends from the passenger compartment into the cargo area," the company said.

Interior features include an under-floor storage area in the rear, along with reversible cargo floor panels (ideal for dirty objects). There is a large opening for the tailgate, which helps immensely while loading or unloading luggage or other cargo.

Under the hood of all models is a 3.5-liter v-6 engine with 271 horsepower and 254 foot-pounds of torque - the same engine used in the Accord V-6 sedan and coupe.

The engine uses variable cylinder management to save on fuel. This system automatically cuts out either two or three of the cylinders during highway cruising to help give the vehicle EPA ratings of 18 mpg city/27 highway with two-wheel drive, or 17/25 with all-wheel drive.

All-wheel-drive models have Honda's permanent "Real Time 4WD" system, which operates automatically with no driver input. There is no way to turn it off. It's designed for everyday driving, though, not for serious off-road exploring. It does not feature low-range gearing necessary for rugged trails.

Standard are such amenities as dual-zone automatic climate control with second-row ventilation; a 360-watt AM/FM/compact disc audio system with seven speakers and a six-disc changer; 60/40 split-folding rear seatback; 17-inch aluminum wheels with 225/65 R17 all-season tires; a hidden removable utility box; cruise control; a moon roof; auto up/down driver and front-passenger windows; rear privacy glass steering wheel audio controls; compass and outside temperature indicator; automatic projector-beam headlights; fog lights; chrome door handles, body-colored power side mirrors with defrost; and more.

With the leather upgrade, the seat surfaces are trimmed in leather, along with the steering wheel and shifter knob. This package also brings heated front seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror, 18-inch aluminum wheels with 225/60 R18 all-season tires, memory driver's seat, memory side mirrors with reverse tilting capability, cargo privacy cover, universal garage opener, Kevlar cone speakers, aluminum dome-type front tweeter speakers and a USB audio interface.

along with electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist; side-curtain air bags with a rollover sensor for both rows; driver and front-passenger-side air bags; and active front head restraints.

"The Accord Crosstour combines the sophisticated refinement of a premium sedan with versatile characteristics of an SUV to create an entirely distinct concept within the Crossover Utility Vehicle segment," Honda said in making the pricing announcement.

The navigation system also has a backup camera that displays its image on the dashboard nav screen.

Other Crosstour safety features include Honda's Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure, which "enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions," the company said;

Honda begins mass producing new vehicle in Ohio

EAST LIBERTY, Ohio - Honda Motor Co. says it has begun mass production in Ohio of its new crossover utility vehicle.

The automaker says the 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour began rolling off the line Monday night at the company's factory in East Liberty.

It's the largest vehicle ever produced at the plant, which also makes the Honda CR-V and Honda Element.

Honda says the Crosstour combines the features of a sedan with a sport utility vehicle.

Honda's engine plant in nearby Anna is supplying the V-6 engines for the Crosstour. The transmissions are being supplied by the Honda plant in Russells Point.

The Crosstour goes on sale Nov. 20.

Honda CR-Z

Honda rolled into the Tokyo Auto Show with the latest version of the CR-Z hybrid, a car that may well be the spiritual successor to the CR-X, and said we'll see it on the road next year.

Judging from the pre-production prototype on the stand in Tokyo, Honda wants to push gas-electric technology deep into sporting territory with the slick two-seater. Power comes from a 1.5-liter i-VTEC gasoline engine mated to the latest version of the Integrated Motor Assist hybrid technology found in the Insight and Civic Hybrid. The car also gets a six-speed manual gearbox - the first time you'll see one in a hybrid.

"The Honda CR-Z will expand our lineup of hybrid vehicles and reinforce the fun-to-drive values associated with the Honda brand," said Erik Berkman, VP of automobile planning and logistics for American Honda Motor Co. "Beyond great styling and features, CR-Z will bring new levels of engagement and fun to customers interested a small car or a hybrid vehicle."

Motor Trend cites "a source close to Honda" who says the CR-Z should get 32 to 35 mpg. Honda plans to bring a production model to the Detroit auto show in January and says the car will go on sale in Japan in February. Look for it here in the states in the second half of the year.

Honda P-NUT

Honda has been working feverishly on their small car market for quite some time now, and for a good reason. A large part of the market today is looking for small, fuel efficient vehicles. Their latest concept, dubbed the P-NUT offers exactly that.

The P-NUT made its debut at this year's Los Angeles Auto Show and stands for Personal Neo-Urban Transport, which explains its small size and open design. The P-NUT concept uses a modular rear engine design that would be able to house several different drive-trains, depending on the needs of the driver.

Measuring a miniscule 11'2" long, 5'8" wide and 4'7" high, the P-NUT would be able to fit into just about any parking spot you could want. Up to three people can be seated, with the driver located centrally and 2 seats flanking. The rear seats can also be folded down to increase your available storage area.

While the design for the P-NUT is comparatively mild, one thing does stick out; the windshield/roof. This was done to offer a place for the built in HUD to project information to the driver in real time.

If Honda decides to move forward with the P-NUT concept, expect to see it sometime before 2012.
