Unlike the current “upright” model, the 2016 Pilot showed some raking shapes. The Pilot appears lower than the current model – more crossover-like than before. Overall length will grow by 3.5 inches, which means a bigger cabin for better cargo and space management than before. It will also mean better three-row seating space and better access to the third row. A one-touch walk-in will send the second row seat forward for better step-in and exit. Third row passengers will benefit from a 2.5-inch entry width and a 1-inch lower step-in height compared to the current model.

The 2016 Pilot will see some firsts for premium features. More LED lighting will be available for better vision throughout. A second-row set of captain’s chairs will be available on upper models, another first for the Pilot. In all, the Pilot will have a premium feel throughout, regardless of model chosen.

Compared to the current model, the Pilot will shed 300 pounds in curb weight. This is due to a more integrated body structure compared than before.

A new instrument panel will incorporate the latest Honda technology for connectivity and infotainment. The 8-inch Display Audio system will enable better smartphone integration via HondaLink connected car system and an improved navigation system. This will also be driven by an Android-based operating system. Second and Third row passengers will enjoy a new 9-inch rear seat entertainment system that will play DVD and BlueRay discs. The Pilot will also feature various connections for other devices, including a 115-volt outlet and a HDMI port for gaming systems.

The only engine option available is the 3.5liter i-VTEC V6, as on the current model. The V6 will get Earth Dreams technology that will be designed for more efficiency in engine operation towards better fuel economy. This will be coupled with Variable Cylinder Management, which will deactivate cylinders at certain speeds to reduce wear on the engine. Idle Stop technology will also be available on the Pilot, which will shut down the engine at a full stop to further reduce fuel consumption and engine wear. New for the 2016 model is a duet of new transmissions. On lower models, a six-speed automatic will be available, while upper models get a nine-speed automatic transmission. Both transmissions are new to the Pilot. Front wheel drive will be standard with available all-wheel drive on all models.

Active safety will be an important step towards making the Pilot one of the most secure mid-sized crossovers available. Active safety features will include Honda’s LaneWatch display, Blind Spot Indicators, Multi-Angle Rear View Camera, Collision Mitigation Braking System, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keeping Assist System, Rear Cross Traffic Monitor, Adaptive Cruise Control and a Honda-first Road Departure Mitigation system. The Pilot will also be manufactured with Honda’s next generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure.

The Pilot was fully developed here in the U.S.A. It will be built at the Lincoln, Alabama plant, along with its V6 engine. No performance, fuel economy figures have been release. Pricing and availability have not been announced at this time.
